Gweduck Water and
Airborn Tests |
 |
In March, taxi tests and short take offs were
made with the all fiberglass and graphite Gweduck seaplane which
was designed originally by Ben Ellison and a team of others. M. Hollmann
designed the structure 14 years ago. The
amphibian carries 6 people and has a gross weight of 6,000 lbs.
Empty weight is 4,000 lbs. Aircraft was built and is flown by
Ben Ellison of Ellison Fluid Systems in Bellevue, Washington.

EAA Chapter 62
Visits Aircraft Designs |
 |
March 6, 2008, Martin Hollmann gave a talk to EAA
Chapter 62 and on March 8 20 members and old friends of Hollmann
flew out to visit ADI in Monterey. Everyone had a great time but
when it came time to go home, the Monterey fog rolled in and
many members rented a car and drove back to San Jose. In April,
Terri and Bob Gorman and Chapter 62 will fly to Columbia airport
to go camping and hoteling. See www.eaa62.org
for more info. |

Allan Tatarian
passed away on 28 September 2007 |
 |
My good friend and fellow gyroplane pilot, Allan
Tatarian, passed away. Allan test flew the world's first
ultralight gyroplane, my Bumble Bee, at Hollister Airport, CA in
1983. Allan also flight demonstrated in the Bumble Bee at
Oshkosh in 1984. He died of cancer. Allan was always a joy
to be with and his great sense of humor and adventure will be
remembered by his friends. He will be sorely missed by all who
knew him. God bless you Allan. |

STEVE FOSSETT,
missing since early September, 2007 |
|
Dave Saler from Air
Crafters LLS in
Watsonville, CA called me to ask if I would design the fuel tanks for
Steve Fosset’s new adventure, a record setting Bo 105
helicopter which I had worked on in Germany. His new project made me realize I was working for a
man who also loves pushing the state of the art in flying
machines. I sent Steve my DVD on “Whirly Girls.” It is
a promotional movie that encourages people to do something what
others try to discourage you from doing. Steve would relate to
that. When someone tells me, “no! you cannot do that,” I
work extra hard to show them I can. In return for the DVD, Steve
sent me his autobiography, “Chasing the Wind” and I sent him
mine “My Life.” I could not put “Chasing the Wind” down
and read it cover to cover in two days. I recommend this book to
everyone. His
book can be purchased for $24.95 from Virgin Books Ltd, Thames
Warf Studios,
Rainville Rd.

VERTICAL CHALLENGE
HELICOPTER AIR SHOW |
|
Saturday, June 16, Hiller Aviation Museum
at San Carlos Airport held their 7th VCH AIR SHOW. Two gyros
were present, the Sportster shown on the right with me and Rita
and a Sparrow Hawk that had been flown in from Livermore. It was
one of the best shows I have been to in a long time. We met many
old friends and sold ROTARY WING and WHIRLY GIRLS DVDs
and HANNA REITSCH Books. Willie Turner, son of
Gail and Bill Turner did a fantastic job in putting
this show on. Gail flew in the Sportster with me 30 years
ago and she now lives in Oregon. See you at VHS next year or,
better yet, at the next airshow. |

2008 AirVenture |
Martin
Hollmann is too busy this year to attend AirVenture. Sorry but
I will miss seeing many of you. But I will be attending Golden
West and other fly-ins. See you there.

New Ground Vibration
Test Equipment |
|

|
ADI has purchased a 50 lb shaker, power amplifier
and sign generator to perform ground vibration testing to
substantiate finite element analysis results. An oscilloscope is
used to measure the input and output frequency. The upper wave
is the input and the lower the output showing 6.57 Hz for first
wing bending. This matches the fea perfectly. |
